Top UK Universities Accepting MOI (Medium of Instruction) Without IELTS for Indian Students

For a large number of Indian students who wish to pursue their studies in the United Kingdom, taking up the English language proficiency exams such as IELTS or PTE is considered a big challenge since it usually puts up a delay in the application process due to the high cost of the exam, coaching, and anxiety.

The great thing about this is that most prestigious universities in the UK are known to have an exemption for IELTS exams if you have an Official MOI letter.

What Is an MOI Letter and Who Is Eligible for It?

The Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter is an official letter from your college/university registrar. It confirms in writing that:

• Your bachelor/master program's curriculum, assessments, and exams were completed and evaluated entirely in English.
• You have satisfied the English proficiency requirement set internally by the university through your past academic record (a good Class 12 English grade percentage, such as 70%+, in CBSE/ICSE/State boards).

Top UK Universities Accepting MOI Letters

Despite differing policies among departments, a few reputed UK universities consider MOI letters for admission of foreign students:

1. University of Greenwich – Usually accepts MOI letters for reputed Indian universities in different courses of business and computing.
2. Swansea University – Often gives language exemptions if you have completed your degree recently with good English marks.
3. Northumbria University – Considers both MOI documents as well as your academic background along with high school English marks.
4. University of Portsmouth – Can accept MOI letters on an individual basis, especially if you have a first-class degree from Indian Section A universities.
5. Teesside University – Offers flexible criteria for admitting foreign students and holistic profile consideration.

(Note: University policies are subject to periodic revision. Always verify specific course requirements with an education consultant before applying.)

Key Requirements to Qualify for an MOI Waiver

To increase your chances of receiving an admission offer without the IELTS score, make sure that you meet the following criteria:

• Completion of the Degree: The completion date of the previously obtained degree needs to be between 2 to 5 years ago.
• High School English Scores: Getting a score of 70 percent or more in class 12 English improves your chances of obtaining the MOI waiver.
• Online University Interview: Make sure that you prepare for the brief interview in English conducted by the university.

Will the UK Visa (UKVI) Accept MOI Instead of IELTS?

This is the crucial difference that each student should know:

• University Admission vs. Student Visa: Whereas the MOI letter may well waive the university English requirement and allow you to get a CAS, the office of the UK Visas and Immigration has its own requirements.
• Quite often today many higher education establishments in the UK have HEI status, thus being authorized to evaluate the English language skills of a student for the purpose of the visa independently without any SELT such as IELTS.
