Canada has always been the number one choice for Indian students who wanted to pursue higher studies and live permanently outside India. But as we move closer to the 2027 academic year the scenario of international education is going through a huge change.
Recently, due to various restrictions on study permits imposed by the Canadian government including a quota limit of 155,000 new international students for study permits and a decline in study permit approval percentages (currently around 19-26% for Indian students) pursuing higher education in Canada has become increasingly difficult and costly. The cost of pursuing a two year master's degree in Canada has now risen to ₹55-75 lakhs. This is why Indian students are looking for affordable alternatives.
And here comes Germany and Ireland. Both these European countries are now emerging as favorites for Indian students. Let's find out why this is happening and why you should opt for them in 2027.
Why Germany is Experiencing a Surge in Popularity
While Germany has always been known for its excellence in engineering and manufacturing it is now emerging as an excellent destination for international students in all fields of study.
1. Zero Tuition Fees for Public Universities
The biggest draw for studying in Germany is affordability. Most public universities in Germany charge zero tuition fees; students only need to pay a nominal semester administrative fee (typically between €200 and €400). When compared to the exorbitant fees in North America this allows Indian students to graduate virtually debt-free. You will need to show proof of financial resources, usually through a blocked account (Sperrkonto) containing at least €11,904 (approx. ₹10.6 Lakhs) to cover your living expenses for the year.
2. A Hub of STEM and Innovation
Germany is a world leader in engineering, automotive, natural sciences and IT. If you are among those millions of STEM students of India then a degree from a German university will be highly valued internationally.
3. English Taught Programs
Even though the official language of Germany is German, there is no requirement that you should know the language fluently in order to study there. For attracting the best international talent for universities, English-taught bachelor's and master's degree programs have become common in German universities. You should have an IELTS band score between 6.0-7.0 or a TOEFL score of 80-90 if you select English-taught courses.
