In memory of Alan (1925–1994), the first Dean of the Faculty of Education, and Joyce (1925–2009), his devoted partner in the local arts scene, the award was founded. Nipissing University North Bay offers two scholarship opportunities to its Native learners who complete the Bachelor of Education program, the Indigenous Teacher Education Program (ITEP), the Teacher of Indigenous Language as a Second Language (TILSL) or Indigenous Classroom Assistant Diploma Program (ICADP).
