5 New Rules for International Students in Canada 2024

Canadian universities are always looking to give smooth study and cultural experiences. The universities always want to provide you with a successful academic journey. So, here are the new rules for International students in Canada.

1. Increase in Cost of Living

The applicants apply on or after January 1, 2024, and the cost of living is raised to $20,635, including the tuition fee and travel expenses for the Canada study permit. The number of family members living with an international student increases their living expenditure. In the early 2000s, it was anticipated at $10,000 and never increased till then but it made it difficult for overseas students to deal with basic expenses.

2. Cap on the Number of International Students Coming to Canada

The Canadian government has capped the number of visas which is around 35% fewer than before. Canada plans to issue only 360,000 new study permits this year, and will only accept up to 606,250 in 2024. Therefore, make sure you know Canada's cap on the number of abroad students before applying for a permit.

The cap does not include:

  • Study permit application or extension from Canada
  • Study permit application at primary or secondary school
  • Study permit application for a graduate degree program

3. New Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) Requirement

The new study permit application should include the provincial attestation letter from a province or territory. The application should be submitted on January 22, 2024 after 8:30 a.m. EST (Toronto time). The federal government might process the PAL till march 31, 2024.

This process does not apply to the following aspects when applying to:

  • Upto the grade 12 education
  • Doctoral degree or program
  • Permit extension within Canada

4. Spousal Open Work Permit Eligibility Change

Open work permits will only be available to spouses of foreign students pursuing master's and doctoral degrees in the upcoming weeks. The spouse's enrollment program will expire soon for the international students who enrolled in the programs.

The work permit is provided to the spouses of the students who enrolled in any program in Canada. The common-law partners and spouses of international students can extend their work permits once the changes take place.

The spouses and common-law partners of abroad students have now open work permits. They are enrolled in graduate and undergraduate programs but not able or eligible for an open work permit.

5. Changes to Post-Graduation Work Permit Eligibility

The work permit is available to the individual who has completed their three-year post-graduation in less than two years. Such people also have fulfilled and completed the PGWP eligibility requirements till February 15, 2024. Up to a maximum of three years, the time period of Post-graduation work permit for programs other than master's degrees will match the time period of the study program.

The foreign students enrolled in a program under the curriculum licensing agreement. Such students are no longer qualified for the PG work permit from September 1, 2024. The overseas students meet other program eligibility criteria for a public-private partnership (PPP) college program. The new students are not eligible for a PG work permit under the PGWP program.

Who Qualifies for a Longer Post-graduate Work Permit (PGWP)?

Students who complete master's degree programs that last less than two years—eight months at the very least—may be qualified for a three-year PGWP beginning on February 15, 2024. Your PGWP's duration is determined by the length and intensity of your study program as well as the date on which your passport expires, whichever occurs first.
